Stories from our Neighborhood
Many potential tourists will never hear about the beauty of our neighborhood and our people, west of the rock cut in Corner Brook. All media, television, radio, newspapers, even our airport have been stripped away from us and are monopolized by our Capital City, St. John’s, some 500 kilometers away.
Just as it’s concentration of news-worthy information is applied (almost entirely) to the Avalon Peninsula or Metro, so too is the dispersion of tax dollars. NTV’s (Newfoundland Television) international viewing and listening audience must falsely believe that Newfoundland and Labrador is comprised of St. John’s and/or the Avalon alone.
Surprisingly, Acadian and Continental French, Mi’kmaq and other Aboriginal, English and a splash of up to 24 mega languages are unique to our part of the Island, so unique as to be labelled “The Tower of Babel”. Yet, our family names and the names of our communities are so rarely spoken by news media hosts, that they are embarrassingly mispronounced.
This book is a rare chance to give readers a glimpse into those communities, to introduce you to some of our characters who make our neighborhoods so rich and so special. Hope you enjoy the ride!
